Tensions Rise After Republican Agenda Pushed in Senate

 The Labour Party and Green Socialist Union are today attempting to push their constitutional alteration bill (to establish a republic) through the Senate, using to their advantage the absent of 2 Conservative Senators and 1 Legentarian First Senator who are engaged in campaign activities. Senator Tristan Gross, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate and Senator Sally Farteigh, Leader of the Greens in the Senate this morning announced they would be both proposing the bill and expected it to pass in the same sitting, bypassing the committee stage.

Sir Emerson Miles, Leader of the Government in the Senate and Minister for Defence informed the media this morning that this was a "political tactic to bypass democracy" and "this will not end well for them in the election". The Labour-Greens deal still lacks a majority, with only 6 Senators in comparison the the Conservative-First numbers of 7, however speculation has arisen that Lagran Senator Melony Parne may attempt to cross the floor during the sitting and vote with the Labour and Green Socialist Union for this bill.

Despite the attempt, if the Bill to alter the constitution were to pass, they would still require lower house approval which is dominated by the Conservative Party. Some have speculated that this is an attempt to pass the Senate when vulnerable, and then the House after the election, hoping the Labour Party can scrap into a majority. 

Greens Senator Sally Farteigh attended a small rally in Charterville, Septon this morning where she addressed the crowd, saying "This authoritarian monarchy has no place in modern society," and "Down with the King!". His Excellency the Prime Minister, John Frederickson tweeted about the matter afterwards saying that Senastor Farteigh was a 'disgrace' and 'should not be serving the country if she will not serve the king'. 

Sir David Goolbrooke, former personal secretary to the King and now Leader of the Opposition stated that; "Whilst it is the party that I lead, it is not the chamber which I manage", when asked about if he would be supporting the Oppositions move to dethrone the King during an under attended Senate sitting. Sir Goolbrooke also stated that "the Labour Party will take to the election the idea of republicanism, but it is ultimately and always will be the decision of the people through a referendum". Shadow Minister Lord Arthur Wallish announced his opposition to the idea as well stating "the monarchy is what brings stability to all forms of instability". 

King Emmanuel I spoke out today about the issue saying; "It is at my displeasure that our parliament would push republicanism", whilst also saying "if the issue goes to a referendum, then I will support the decision of the people of my kingdom". Prince Arthur also spoke out on the matter as the heir to the Legentarian throne, saying it "would be detrimental to the history, present and future of our nation". 

With the election just around the corner, political analysts are saying that this is one of the riskiest political stunts pulled of in Legentarian history.
